GATINEAU, QC, Sept. 21, 2026 /CNW/ -- Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada Kelly Burke made the following statement regarding her application for leave to intervene before the Supreme Court of Canda in the Forum des maires de la Péninsule acadienne versus Minister of Justice and Public Safety case.

"Official language minority communities and their prosperity are key priorities for me. Since the beginning of my mandate, I have repeatedly stated that I would use every tool at my disposal, including legal action, to help support their development and enhance their vitality.

"For this reason, I am seeking leave to intervene before the Supreme Court in a case that concerns the rights of New Brunswick's Francophone community. One of the things I intend to emphasize is the importance of substantive equality between the province's language communities.

"Although the legislation at issue in this case applies exclusively to New Brunswick, the Supreme Court's decision could have an impact on the interpretation and application of language rights across Canada. It could therefore have repercussions on all official language minority communities in the country.

"I would like to emphasize that progress in the area of language rights is often achieved through court decisions. By continuing to refine the interpretation of these rights, the courts help to ensure that English and French can truly thrive throughout the country.

"It is therefore essential for me to seize this opportunity so that I can make a concrete contribution to the protection of official language minority communities and to the advancement of language rights jurisprudence."
